Character Information
Name: Rapunzel Gothel
Canon Origin/Series: Tangled
School Year: Fifth
Gender: Female
Age: Fifteen
Out of school living location: Oxford, England
Blood status: Pureblood
House: Hufflepuff
Personality: Rapunzel is primarily three things - Curious, talented, and sweet. The curiosity comes from her sheltered life, and while Hogwarts quenches a lot of that curiosity, she's very eager to see the world beyond England; to know more about what other people's lives are like. In fact, her curiosity is one of her main driving forces. Due to it, she develops the bravery to look at the world as more than just a scary place. She loves to learn about a number of subjects, and approached the world wide-eyed and ready to be taught - Which leaves her perhaps a bit too impressionable.
She has a number of skills she developed early in life, to cope with being bored, and while none of them are particularly helpful in a big-picture sense - She's mostly artistically gifted - it passes the time. As an artist, she's truly exceptional. Painting is her true passion, whereas her other hobbies are more ways of passing the time. So while her artistic gifts are grand, she is not an expert in her other areas of interest, even the other artsy ones. Still, she's not doing these things to be the best - She's doing them to have fun.
She's also quite... Well, really, good - to the point of being somewhat naive and trusting those she shouldn't - Sometimes. (Trust is kind of a tricky issue with her.) She has a positive nature, is incredibly obedient (around half the time, at lest; she's grown a fair deal but still respects and treasures her "mother"), and in general is just a well-intentioned soul who brings out the best in others. She's non-judgmental and very open to new ideas about other people and accepting their flaws. A large part of this is the fact that she's had so few people in her life before Hogwarts, that she really isn't about to discriminate when it comes to who she gets to know. ...
Rapunzel can be a bit of a scaredy-cat, but it's not without good reason. While, as mentioned above, she has the ability to bring out the best in people, she was always taught that there was no best in most people. Though she can be trusting of people, certainly, her initial reaction is -- sometimes -- still suspicion and fear when meeting someone new. And just because she has fear in here, doesn't mean she's not strong. Rapunzel can be suprisingly tough for someone who has led such a sheltered life. She's not afraid to take on much larger opponents, or put herself in charge and act on the craziest ideas.
Additionally, she is perfectly capable of being tricky and manipulative when a goal is important to her. On that note, the girl is incredibly determined when she has a dream to reach. She just doesn't give up, even if she has to do some wrong - so long as it's not truly cruel - to get where she wants to be. Rapunzel is also quite resourceful in this goal-persuing. She can make most any object useful for the situation she is in, and can think he way out of a number of situations even without props. She works hard, faces her fears, and thinks and acts her way around obstacles when she's on a mission.
Canon Background: When Rapunzel's mother, the queen, was pregnant, she became dangerously ill. The people of her kingdom sought out a magical golden flower from a nearby island, a flower that could heal... And do more. It could keep people young, and Gothel had been using it for this for hundreds of years. The people of the kingdom found the flower despite Gothel's attempts to hide it, and made it into a soup which saved the queen... And transferred the flower's powers to the hair of the newborn baby. Gothel snuck into the baby's room the very night she was born and tried to cut the fair for herself, but found that when the hair was cut it turned brown and lost it's powers. So Gothel took the child, raising her as her own, keeping her locked in a tower for nearly eighteen years with terrible stories of the dangerous world beyond their home, and of the people who would try to take Rapunzel for her hair. Rapunzel's only friend in the tower was a chameleon named Pascal. She picked up a number of hobbies trying to pass the time, but wanted to see the outside world, particularly curious about the floating lights she would see each year on the night of her birthday, not knowing they were lanterns sent out for her - for the lost princess.
(Technically, this is the canon point Rapunzel is being taken from, although she has a fair level of her development from later in the movie as she goes on her journey with Flynn. This is due to the fact that she's been at Hogwarts for several years and as such it wouldn't be logical for her to be as sheltered as she was at the start of the movie.)
Background (AU!Canon; HP): Rapunzel was to be born into a wealthy pureblood family, in the Corona, California, in the United States. However, during the pregnancy, her mother became seriously ill. Her father sought a cure - and found a rare Dittany plant in the garden of a witch called Ms. Gothel, who liked to use the plant in her Shrinking Solutions to heal injuries as well as make her look younger. (The latter being the natural way the potion worked; unrelated to the use of Dittany.). He took the plant to make Essence of Dittany for his wife's illness. Ms. Gothel saw the man take her plant, but not in time to stop him. She was not, however, about to forget what he'd done. Meanwhile, the potion cured Rapunzel's mother, and a healthy baby was born... With a fair deal of hair for a baby, and a unique gift. The Dittany had infused with Rapunzel's hair, giving the hair the same healing properties as the plant. Ms. Gothel realized what had happened, and that the baby was the answer to the loss of the Dittany plant - And, more importantly to the witch, her way to get revenge. She took the child in her first days of life, sneaking in one night... And Rapunzel's parents never saw her again, or knew who had taken their child. Ms. Gothel found that she had been right about the baby's hair, and that when used as a potion ingredient it functioned just like the Dittany plant.
Ms. Gothel moved herself and the child to Oxford, England. Needless to say, she did not treat the girl particularly well, keeping her hidden from the world so she'd never have to share Rapunzel's gift with others, and so Rapunzel's true parents would never find her. She regularly put the girl down to destroy her confidence, so she wouldn't get any ideas about exploring the world beyond their home - Though she always wrote this insults off as teasing, so the girl wouldn't question her love. And she didn't. After all, she was Rapunzel's mother, and the young girl couldn't remember the love her birth parents had - however briefly - shown her. In fact, she couldn't remember them at all. As far as Rapunzel knew, this was just how parents were. Ms. Gothel also told her horrible stories about the cruel nature of the world, and - more than anything else - made sure to warn Rapunzel that people would try to take her away and use her hair for themselves if she revealed her gift. Due to this, Rapunzel was incredibly scared of others and didn't make friends besides her pet frog, Pascal.
Eventually, though, the letter from Hogwarts came, and Rapunzel was determined to go. She was growing restless stuck in almost entirely in her home day after day, and craved to know more of the outside world. Her mother didn't want her to, but also didn't want to cause a stir or raise suspicion by keeping the child from attending the school. She reluctantly sent Rapunzel off, warning her once again of how cruel people were - And what they would do if they learned about her abilities. At first, Rapunzel was certain this was true, and kept to herself as much as possible. But as her first year went on, she began to realize that people simply... Weren't the way her mother had described them. She began making friends. She began to come out of her shell. However, her hair's power remained a secret -- The fear of being used or even kidnapped has not faded. -- despite the questions she got regarding its roughly seventy foot length; Rapunzel's hair's healing power is directly proportionate to the length of hair, and it is stronger the longer it is.
In addition to her required classes, Rapunzel has been taking Care of Magical Creatures since third year and is currently in her fourth and final years of Flying classes. She also has been taking Magic and Muggle Home Economics from her first year, and continues to take them. She does decently to quite well in most classes, particular gifted in Care of Magical Creatures, Home Economics, and Charms, while struggling in Potions despite her "mother"'s gift for the subject.
